Parents Unleashed 2019: Stage 2, Rouge Boater Cross

Stage 2 of Unleashed was held on the Rouge River on a rapid called the Gauntlet. It is a super fun and rowdy rapid with lots of good waves and then a tough move at the end into an eddy guarded by a hole. It is a great boater cross course because it can really shake things up. The person in the lead coming into the finish doesn't always finish first, and if you missed the eddy you couldn't advance. There were a lot of upsets.

The night before the event, Leif and I had our big night out (15th anniversary of being together) at a super super fancy restaurant in Ottawa (think five course meal with words 'chaga demi-glace' and 'bonito cured duck egg' and 'cucumber mango-gin emulsion'), which meant that we rolled in around 1 am and missed Kalob's athlete meeting.  Kalob is really good at making you feel like you are disappointing him if you show up late or miss a meeting.  I felt bad, but I did ask permission (sort of) and was forgiven (I think). The next morning I went for a quick pre-surf and showed up at the mandatory meeting 3 minutes late with four other paddlers and we were all stared down and shamed by the rest of the group who were waiting for us.  It was pretty impressive that Kalob managed to get 20+ athletes all to meetings on time for the duration of all the events (I think I might have been the most truant athlete).  All that World Class wrangling has made him a pro at this, I should be taking parenting notes, I think it might come in handy once Davis is a little older.

Anniversary Date Night (Bekta Fine Dining and Wine Bar). 15 years!

Although it would have been nice to get a casual lap in on the course the day before, it just didn't happen. Things happen quickly during Unleashed as water levels change and decisions have to be made, so as a competitor you don't really get much practice on the features and courses before they occur. It's show up and show what ya got.

Basically, I got demolished (18th) but Leif was a steady freight train (3rd). We randomly drew numbers that put us into four prelims heats and then from there we randomly drew sticks to place us in our position in the eddy. The top three who caught the finish line eddy advanced to semi finals. Everyone who lost went into a losers heat to determine their placement. This 10+ person losers heat was brutal! I came into the last section of the course with like 6 other boats within paddle throwing distance and we all crashed and burned into each other and missed the eddy as a pack.

The Slave River paddlers (minus myself) - Hayden, Leif and Pierce were all in the same heat and all made it to semis.  Leif and Hayden advanced to finals, but Pierce just missed the cut.  The losers of Semis had a placement heat and Pierce handily came in first to take 7th place.  In the finals heat, Leif plowed straight through the center of the hole to clinch third, while Hayden had some sort of surfing shenannigan up top, so he was unable to overtake Leif, but ended up in fourth.

Below is a bracket diagram of the event. What is particularly amusing is the number of paddlers who missed the finish eddy (orange). This is made more humorous by the fact that when Seth brought up the question of what happens when someone misses the eddy- do they still advance? at the meeting. Bren (I think it was him) said something along the lines of this won't be a problem because we would all make the eddy. Notice Bren missed the eddy in prelims.

We are putting together a mash up of as much of our live commentary and footage as we could, but since we were both competing it was a little spotty, After all, there is only two of us. It will be a little while before the link goes up. In the mean time, here is the link to Seth Ashworth's live shit talk feed for Stage 2 and to the official result smash up edit by Send (which is hilariously hyped up).

Here are the boater cross and event results after stage 2
